Are You Thinking About Taking a Class at Another College?

If you plan to take a winter or summer session class at another college and transfer the credits back to Cortland, you must first seek permission and receive approval prior to enrolling in the course.  Make sure to Click Here for information regarding the permission to transfer process.

Read all information carefully.  Make sure that you fill out the Permission to Transfer Credit from Another Institution form completely and turn it into the Advisement and Transition office.  You will also need to utilize the Transfer Equivalency Charts to accurately choose the courses that you plan to transfer.

What You Need to Know About Advisement and Registration

Schedule an appointment with your advisor!  You will find your advisor’s contact information on myRedDragon.  It is your responsibility to make the appointment.  You must meet with your advisor to receive your registration PIN.
Be prepared for your appointment:  Review your CAPP and become familiar with your degree requirements.  Write down questions so that you don’t forget things to ask your advisor once you are at your meeting.  Take a look at the course schedule and begin planning what you’d like to take.
During your appointment: Generate a schedule with your advisor and include a list of alternate classes.  Prepare a schedule that combines both GE and major requirements for a good balance.  After you meet with your advisor you will then be responsible to register for your classes on your own time.
Time Ticket: You will have access to your time ticket through myRedDragon.  Your time ticket is based on your number of completed credit hours.  You can register anytime after your time ticket has been activated.
How you get your PIN:  Your advisor will assign you your registration PIN.  Make sure to schedule a meeting with your advisor to discuss registration and to receive your PIN.  Without your PIN you cannot register.  Your PIN is different from your myRedDragon login.
On hold for what?  Make sure before you register that you have checked for any “holds” on your account which may prevent you from registering.  You can find out if you have holds by checking myRedDragon.  You can receive a hold from unpaid parking tickets, overdue library books, or any balance due.
How to register: Login to myRedDragon and click on the student tab.  On the left hand side under Registrar choose Registration or Drop and Add classes to begin the process.  Also in the Registrar channel is the course schedule where you can search for your classes.

I Think That I Need to Withdraw From a Class...Now What?

  • Are you falling behind in a class?
  • Did you decide to change your major and therefore don’t feel that you need a particular class anymore?
  • Are you struggling with the material or having difficulty with your instructor?
These are among some of the reasons why you might choose to withdraw from a class.  If you have taken the time to really think about your decision to withdraw, and still feel it is necessary or in your best interest, there is a process you must follow.

Take the following into consideration before you decide to withdraw:
  • Courses that you withdraw from will be indicated on your Cortland transcript with a X.  There will be no explanation of why you withdrew or a grade associated with the class.
  • There may be financial implications if you fall below 12 credit hours.  If you are receiving financial aid you must continue to make satisfactory academic progress toward your degree.  Make sure to speak with a financial aid advisor for more information.
  • Courses that you are taking may have different credit hours.  Be careful when tallying your credits.
  • The withdrawal deadline is Tuesday, November 15.  Have all paperwork completed and turned in by this date.  The official withdrawal from course form requires signatures by you, your academic advisor, the course instructor, and finally your associate dean.
  • Give yourself enough time to obtain the appropriate signatures.  Once the deadline has passed, you will not be permitted to withdraw from the course.

Mid-Semester is Almost Here!

What Are Mid-Semester Estimates?
Is it hard to believe that you’re already almost half way through the semester?!  How are you doing in your classes?  Do you have a class that you are concerned about?  Have you been considering withdrawing from a class due to concerns about your performance?  Are you worried about your GPA?

Mid-semester estimates will soon be posted by faculty on myRedDragon.  You will not receive a paper copy of your midterm grades in the mail.  You are responsible for logging  into myRedDragon to check your grades.  Mid-semester estimates can be found under the Registrar channel on the left hand side of your Student Tab .  When you check your mid-semester estimates you will see one of  three letters indicating your performance:

“S” = satisfactory
“U” = unsatisfactory
“F” = failing

If you see a “NR” that means that your instructor didn’t submit a grade in time to meet the deadline.  Make sure to ask your professor if this happens.
If you have received an unsatisfactory grade and are concerned about it, make an appointment to see your professor or seek help through ASAP.

Don't forget about your Transfer Buddy.  If you have a question or concern, just ask!
