Happy Thanksgiving!

When you return from break the rest of the semester is going to fly by!  Be prepared for final exams, papers, and final projects.

Here are a few time management tips:
  1. Set Goals: Determine exactly what you want to accomplish.
  2. Prioritize: Once you know what needs to be accomplished, you must prioritize your tasks. This means figuring out which tasks are most important and which ones can be put on hold.
  3. Organize: Being organized will help you achieve your goals in a timely manner. You need to organize your tasks so you will know what needs to be accomplished and when they need to be accomplished. Create a weekly calendar that includes your schedule for classes, study time, social events, club meetings, exercise time, and any other time necessary to achieve your goals.
  4. Avoid Procrastination: Procrastination is the main downfall of achieving time management skills. If you plan on doing an activity, stick to your schedule; don't put it off until tomorrow.
  5. Know When You're Most Productive: Everyone has a time period during the day when they are most productive. Maybe you get more tasks accomplished in the morning than the evening or vice versa. Use the times when you have the most energy to accomplish the tasks that are more demanding, such as schoolwork.
Have a great Thanksgiving break!

What You Need to Know About Advisement and Registration

Schedule an appointment with your advisor!  You will find your advisor’s contact information on myRedDragon.  It is your responsibility to make the appointment.  You must meet with your advisor to receive your registration PIN.
Be prepared for your appointment:  Review your CAPP and become familiar with your degree requirements.  Write down questions so that you don’t forget things to ask your advisor once you are at your meeting.  Take a look at the course schedule and begin planning what you’d like to take.
During your appointment: Generate a schedule with your advisor and include a list of alternate classes.  Prepare a schedule that combines both GE and major requirements for a good balance.  After you meet with your advisor you will then be responsible to register for your classes on your own time.
Time Ticket: You will have access to your time ticket through myRedDragon.  Your time ticket is based on your number of completed credit hours.  You can register anytime after your time ticket has been activated.
How you get your PIN:  Your advisor will assign you your registration PIN.  Make sure to schedule a meeting with your advisor to discuss registration and to receive your PIN.  Without your PIN you cannot register.  Your PIN is different from your myRedDragon login.
On hold for what?  Make sure before you register that you have checked for any “holds” on your account which may prevent you from registering.  You can find out if you have holds by checking myRedDragon.  You can receive a hold from unpaid parking tickets, overdue library books, or any balance due.
How to register: Login to myRedDragon and click on the student tab.  On the left hand side under Registrar choose Registration or Drop and Add classes to begin the process.  Also in the Registrar channel is the course schedule where you can search for your classes.

I Think That I Need to Withdraw From a Class...Now What?

  • Are you falling behind in a class?
  • Did you decide to change your major and therefore don’t feel that you need a particular class anymore?
  • Are you struggling with the material or having difficulty with your instructor?
These are among some of the reasons why you might choose to withdraw from a class.  If you have taken the time to really think about your decision to withdraw, and still feel it is necessary or in your best interest, there is a process you must follow.

Take the following into consideration before you decide to withdraw:
  • Courses that you withdraw from will be indicated on your Cortland transcript with a X.  There will be no explanation of why you withdrew or a grade associated with the class.
  • There may be financial implications if you fall below 12 credit hours.  If you are receiving financial aid you must continue to make satisfactory academic progress toward your degree.  Make sure to speak with a financial aid advisor for more information.
  • Courses that you are taking may have different credit hours.  Be careful when tallying your credits.
  • The withdrawal deadline is Tuesday, November 15.  Have all paperwork completed and turned in by this date.  The official withdrawal from course form requires signatures by you, your academic advisor, the course instructor, and finally your associate dean.
  • Give yourself enough time to obtain the appropriate signatures.  Once the deadline has passed, you will not be permitted to withdraw from the course.
To access the official withdrawal from course form click here.

Mid-Semester is Almost Here!

What Are Mid-Semester Estimates?
Is it hard to believe that you’re already almost half way through the semester?!  How are you doing in your classes?  Do you have a class that you are concerned about?  Have you been considering withdrawing from a class due to concerns about your performance?  Are you worried about your GPA?

Mid-semester estimates will soon be posted by faculty on myRedDragon.  You will not receive a paper copy of your midterm grades in the mail.  You are responsible for logging  into myRedDragon to check your grades.  Mid-semester estimates can be found under the Registrar channel on the left hand side of your Student Tab .  When you check your mid-semester estimates you will see one of  three letters indicating your performance:

“S” = satisfactory
“U” = unsatisfactory
“F” = failing

If you see a “NR” that means that your instructor didn’t submit a grade in time to meet the deadline.  Make sure to ask your professor if this happens.
If you have received an unsatisfactory grade and are concerned about it, make an appointment to see your professor or seek help through ASAP.

Don't forget about your Transfer Buddy.  If you have a question or concern, just ask!

Beyond Summer Orientation

I hope that everyone had a good experience at orientation.  I know how tricky it can be to pick out classes and make a schedule, but in the future it will be much easier!  You received (and probably felt bombarded) lots of information in a short period of time, so don't hesitate to contact me with questions.  emily.quinlan@cortland.edu

I will be sending some information to you at home very shortly that will include the name of your Transfer Buddy.  Every new transfer to Cortland receives a Transfer Buddy to help answer questions or to give quick tips about being new to the college.  Make sure to utilize your buddy because they're here to help you if you need it.

Also, check the blog regularly for transfer news, events, and other tips!

P.S. Do you see at the top of the blog where there is a box that is followed by submit?  If you enter your cortland.edu email address, you will recieve emails letting you know when the blog is updated!
